Going car shopping. Which is a better comparison of a good car - Year or Mileage? ?
- I would say neither! I would look at the condition of the car, how it sounds how it shifts. Check for leaks and rattles and squeaks coming from the engine, transmission and brakes. If you feel comfortable take the car to a mechanic and have him / her check it out. A car can have low miles but could be beaten up so year and milage are not accurate ways of finding out a quality product. If you do not have much tech savvy then buy a car that's still under manufacturer warranty and that will give you peace of mind even if the car has high miles for the year
- I would say it doesn't matter. It's true that the older a car is, the more likely it will have problems that need fixing. However, the previous owner might have meticulously maintained it, keeping it good as new because he liked the car so much. This is why there are many cars running around from the 1950s and 1960s that drive and look like new; because they were maintained, or restored to original condition. Either way, they're still running like new and, if maintained properly, will continue to do so in another fifty years. High mileage can be the same way. There are cars that have gone for over 1, 000, 000 miles. The current record holder is a 1960s Volvo PV544 with just over 2, 000, 000 miles owned by a mapmaker. During the car's lifetime, he took excellent care of it, and as a result, has only had to do basic maintenance like fluid changes, tire changes, brake replacements, etc. It still has the original interior, body, paint, engine, and drivetrain. As a general rule, you should look at both. Ultimately, given the choice between two of the same car, one older, one with higher miles, and no reported problems, I would go for the older one. This is because the higher mileage of the other leads to wear and tear on the mechanical parts of the car, like the engine and drivetrain. This is all uming that the older car is equally well - maintained, equally priced, and had an equally good reliability report as the newer model. I hope this has answered your question. If you have any more, please feel free to ask
- Overall condition is the only reasonable comparison. Mileage and age are criteria to begin your search but the overall condition of the vehicle should be the deciding factor. If the car was abused, driven hard or not maintained properly I do not care how low the miles are or how new the car is, it will not be on my list to consider
- Neither. You judge a car by it's mechanical faults as well as other things. E. G. - Is the frame rotted? How are the tires? Has the oil been changed at the due intervals? Is the exhaust loud? That could be a sign of a hole in the pipe or a bad manifold. Check the spark plugs and wires. any signs of wear and tear? Look at the tranny fluid - is it nice and red or is it brown? Look at the inside, are the signs of water damage? Pour a bucket of water over the roof, making sure to cover the windshield, doors, and back window. If there are leaks, the seals need to be replaced. Does the engine make funny knocking noise? Belt squeals? Any oil splatters inside the hood? That last one could be a head gasket that needs to be replaced. Does it shift smooth? If it doesn't you might be missing some teeth in the gears. Do the breaks squeal or make a shusshing sound? It needs new pads or drums. Is the brake pedal mush? Could be a brake line problem or the calipers are on the way to frozen. My Jeep has over 150, 000 miles on it, and it's a 1994. It runs wonderfully, and has little to no body flaws. My husband has a 1986 Mustang that is in perfect condition, with only 45, 000 miles. Hence, do those spot checks and disregard the mileage and the year. An older car that's been kept well will do you better than a shiny new piece of crap that hasn't been taken care of mechanically
